If reinstallation of the OS actually becomes necessary, you can download the latest version from the Roland website (assuming you have a SCSI connection to a computer). I had to do that a few months ago in order to optimize VS Pro. The instructions are posted on the website and it's a pretty painless process.

my father had stored his 1880 near some heavy duty amplifiers, and subsequently, all operating system information got wiped in the 1880. the hard drive was previously uninstalled, so question is, how does he go about reinstalling the os?
when he turns it on, the screen lights up, thats all.

Funky, thanks for weighing in, as always. I think your suggestion is a good workaround. I was asking only because the VS Pro manual states that the mutes can be automated (page 23-8), and in fact there is a dedicated button for that to the right of the M button on the mixdown editor screen. Strange how it's never actually worked for me. We'll see what Datasonics has to say.
Again, if anyone else actually uses mute automation with success, that would be worth knowing. (I use version 7.3 by the way.)

It's been so long since I used VS Pro so don't quote me on this, but... I don't think you can automate mutes that way.
I believe the way I used to automate mutes was to automate the fader volume to 0 for a mute and then automate it back to the desired volume level to unmute. Since it's all digital, the mutes and unmutes happen instantly.

Hey guys,
I'm going to contact Datasonics about this issue, but in the meantime I thought I'd throw this one out there in case anyone has some insight.
Do any of you automate your VS Pro mixes on a regular basis and, if so, are you able to successfully automate your mutes? I've never been able to get my VS-1880 to react to the track mutes I've automated. For example, if I have the track status changing to 0 (mute) at a certain point in the song in the Event Editor, the track status on my VS 1880 doesn't get updated from PLAY to MUTE when the cursor crosses that point in the timeline. All of my fader moves happen just fine, but not the track status changes. I have to do those manually, which of course is frustrating. Is there any trick to making these happen?
If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Hey rich,
Good to see ya, buddy! Yeah, the Vic Wooten / Carter Beauford video was really cool. I used to have it on DVD. The last time I checked, a few people had uploaded segments of it on youtube, so you may want to do a search for it there. The DVD was really long, so that's why you'll only find bits and pieces of it on youtube.
But yeah, Wooten and Beauford made some lovely music on the 1680. :coffee:

Yes, these questions are a bit general, and would probably get better answers in the main from the VS Planet guys.
As for how to connect up your kit, I'm sure this has been discussed before in the posts on this forum, so you might want to look there? I'd be interested in the "Carter Beauford/Victor Wooten studio session" - is this just a case of searching in YouTube, or do you have a URL?
If you are running 2 VS recorders together, you'll have to sync them up via MIDI, with one running as the Master, the other as a Slave unit. I think the most common way to route the audio is to take the audio out of one VS (probably the slave unit) and input it into the other VS (probably via 'Digital In'). Then you can monitor all the audio from either the headphone output of your Master VS or from monitors fed by an output from that VS. The MIDI sync once it is configured correctly will mean that you have simultaneous control of the VS transport functions. If VS Pro is the controller, then you'll use the transport buttons on your PC. If your Master VS is the control, then you'll physically press buttons on the Master VS for all the transport functions. This has been discussed in detail on these VS Pro forums - although you might have to go back a year or two to find the posts.
Anything regarding Reaper needs to be asked on the relevant forum within VS Planet - if you're lucky The Grim Reaper himself, a.k.a. FunkyBeat might clue you in!
Anyway, good luck and apologies to people here if I haven't been responding very effectively to posts here, but over the last year I've been under a lot of pressure in my working life, and to be honest haven't had much time for music. I have told myself though that when I do have more time, that I'm going to try to do it purely for the fun of it, rather than taking it too seriously and getting frustrated by my efforts!

It's late here where I am and you asked a bunch of questions. Too many for me to answer right now. Thanks for joining the forum and posting, but I think a post like this (mostly about 1680s, recording and Reaper) would get you more and better answers at vsplanet.
Don't know when you tried to register at vsplanet, but it should not take long to become registered there and start posting. Let me know if you are not able to post there by tomorrow and I will help you get going as I am a moderator there.

Ok. This may be the wrong forum, but the unfortunately, the one at VSplanet has not confirmed my email. First off let me start out with my general setup. I own two VS 1680's and I also have VS Pro on my computer. I do love VS Pro editing capabilities, as they seem much faster, but as I do not use computers much, the old record and play on the machines seems to be a little easier for me during most applications. I usually go back and download amplitudes and such after everyone has left, and I am sleeping. Then I can do editing while no one is around. I do have some questions about VS Pro, but right now, I have a couple more pressing issues, with the VS 1680's themselves.
Questions:
1) This question is referencing Reaper, that Funkybeats was talking about on another forum. First off, amongst all the little demos and things we do from time to time, my band has decided to start an album. We have decided to do most of the recording at the house, and then get a local studio to help us with the mixdown and mastering. Up to this point everything has gone smoothly. We have done some dumping to there equipment using the digital out. We have dumped some tracks down using Stereo Left and Right cd's, which worked well. Everyone is pleased with the Roland's capabilities and sound quality. The only recommendation they have made, is to go back and record things at the 48 k instead of the 41.1 we have been using. After reading the article, I am still confused, will Reaper get the tracks off at 48k, or is there a way to do it with the machines? I really am not a computer person, and would much rather stick with the current methods, but I feel if there advice is to go with the 48k, I should at least look into it. Any advice would be helpful.
2) Reminder. I am nothing but a musician. The whole recording thing to me is more, I know how to play, not so much know the ins and outs of recording, or equipment. Up until this point, I have been impressed with myself, and the Rolands, by the syncing with midi. Up until this point, when I needed to do bigger recordings, I have taken the master recorder, recorded audio on tracks 1-6, and then ran the stereo master from the slave back to tracks 7-8, and recorded audio on all eight tracks of the slave. I never even knew what the digital in and out did, until they got me to start using it at the studio. My question is, is there a way to use the digital in for the return to my headphones and monitors instead of the inputs 7-8? Right now, the machines slow down when I put the digital in lock, and it actually sounds like they are dragging, and the pitch changes, to where I can't play with it. Am I doing something wrong, or is there someway to link them up where that would work? It would give me two more tracks to record on at one time. If not I may just end of buying a third Roland.
3) Lastly. Could anyone start discussing the way they actually hook up there Rolands during recordings. Not necessarily a wiring diagram, but just some ideas on what they do when getting ready to record, and get to playback. I know this is a handicap, but the way my brain works (even the way I learned most of my music), is I kind of watch other people, pick up a thing or two, learn to do those things, then learn more. One video I have watched was the Carter Beauford/Victor Wooten studio session. They are recording in Nashville on two VS-1680's just like I have. When they pan around the recording desk, I see a million wires coming out of the back of there machines. I usually have about half that, so I am thinking that maybe I am missing some very important functions, that might help me. Especially how to use the digital ins and outs, stereo ins and outs etc. Maybe if people just started talking through it I could learn a little more.
