10 years later and still amazed!
« Thread started on: Feb 4th, 2008, 02:01am » |

It was 10 years when I purchased my first VS recorder. It was an 840 which at the time cost me about $1100. At the time it was a dream come true. I finally had way to record quality CD's for my band. The CD's that we produced scored us numerous gigs as a means to make our own recordings that we could be proud of and sell to our fans (what few there were).
In 2000 I bought a used 1680 from Guitar Center and found that I could sync it to my 840 to achieve 24 tracks.
Enter 2002, I moved to Northern CA and away from my band. The bills started stacking up faster than we could pay them and I'd lost my will to write / record without my former band. Being an Ebay fanatic I managed to fetch $650 for my 1680 and pulled us (my future wife and I) through our roughest month of bills. It was a sad sad day to say the least but at least I still had my 840.
The years went on and life became less about music and more about work / bills / houses etc...
Then one day in 2007 after a drunken night of listening to the "old tunes" my wife made me promise to start writing and recording again. Could you ask for anything more in a mate?
Last October I bought an 1880 with 2 effects boards / Compatible CD Burner / VS Stand on ebay for a mere $400 (good lord how they've depreciated) and I felt complete again. After spending countless hours of reading the manuals again I was up and running.
But something was still lacking, as you all know editing and mixing is a pain is the ass on that tiny little screen. I needed something more. After days of searching I found VS Pro and I must say, it’s all that I've ever wanted and more!
Thank you sooo much to all of the members of these forums for your insight and knowledge. I realize that I could have moved on to any number of DAW's in favor of a VS recorder but why bother? It's familiar, it sounds good and it's apparently still viable with the help of software like VS Pro and Reaper.
Best Wishes, Dave

I can so relate to the sentiment above. I really enjoyed reading your story, Dave. Now one thing... you said it's a PITA to edit on the 1880 screen? Hehehehe... I thought I was in heaven when I moved to my 1880 from my 880 screen. I really had no complaints about the 1880 screen. I was getting along just fine with it for several years... but after I discovered VS Pro... :mg: HOLY CRAP!!!! I was like, "where has this app been all my VS life!" It's the perfect compliment to any compatible VS recorder. I have no complaints about it whatsover for the 2 years I used it in my studio.
I'm so glad you were able to recover from the financial ups and downs :jgle: we all go through and more importantly, you have such a sweetheart of a wife who is encouraging you to be productive in the studio again. That is worth it's weight in gold, my man!
Dave, consider this place (VS Pro Support Forum) as a big huge VS Pro resource for you. The information contained within these walls concerning VS Pro should be enough to keep you happy for a long long time. As long as I have any say so... this place will always exist.
Thanks again, Dave... for registering and sharing your story. Feel free to share as many stories here as you want. It may not be a very vocal group here, but we are very friendly. This place gets many hits per month. We have more lurkers here than actual posters, but it's cool. I know they are coming here for information and then going on their merrily way.
Okay, I'm done. Cya laterzzzzzzzzzz! :guitar:

Dave,
Glad to hear you're enjoying recording again!
The VS series recorders do seem (touch wood) to be very robust & reliable, so are great to use on their own, even better with VS Pro and can even be used as a frontend / control surface for a PC recording platform (yes, I'm following FunkyBeats Reaper forum on the Planet).
So you really can get your money's worth out of these beasts! Just a thought though Dave - some / many of these units can get affected by a problem with the jogwheel 'jumping' or 'skipping'. From what I've heard, this can go from mildly irritating to a whole lot worse. Anyway, if you go to the Planet, find the 1680 / 1880 forum and search for 'jogwheel fix' you'll find that a guy called Bear made up some little circuit boards that correct this. It is an electronic glitch, not mechanical.
If you are planning to use your VS as a Master device for VS Pro, this is a relatively cheap and easy fix. What is more, last I heard Bear had a couple left - if you want one, contact him a.s.a.p. because you may not get one once that batch is gone. He made them to help people out, not to profit from it. I'd get one if in doubt!

Rich,
Thanks for the advice, just got a jogwheel fix. Should I install it now or when troubles start to develop?

I'd say install it now, but its up to you really.
I got one 'just in case'. I'd never had a real problem with my jogwheel, but after I installed it I found that it was much more accurate. Previously it had a tendency to over-shoot what I was going for, and after the fix was much easier!
Quite an easy install, but take your time, don't rush it. Let us know how you get on with it, and if you notice a difference.
